The Java Developer's Journal recently had the opportunity to interview Arthur
van Hoff, formerly with the Java development team at Sun, to find out what he
thinks about Java security, Java business opportunities, and the role of Java
in the industry. Jeff Schneider conducted the interview for JDJ and here is
his report.
JDJ: Are you surprised by the huge initial success that Java has had?
AVH: Not really. It is great technology, and it comes at a great time. The
success is definitely fueled by two factors. The first is the rise of the
Internet, the second factor is the fact that C++ programmers are starting to
realize that C++ is too complicated and that they need something simpler.
JDJ: Do you feel that the current version of the product is stable enough for
the development community to embrace?
AVH: I think it is stable enough. But like most 1.0 products, it needs mor... (more)
Agility seems to be the buzzword du jour. There are "agile enterprises,"
"agile manifestos," "agile programmers," and "agile architectures." Slap
"agile" in front of just about anything and marketers believe it will sell
better. Yet, one of the primary goals of using service-based architectures
was to create "agile systems." This begs the question, was it just marketing
or is there something to it?
Let's cut to the chase. If you are responsible for a system and a user
requests a change to that system, how long will it take to make the change
and move the revised system back into... (more)
JDJ: What is the vision behind Gamelan?
JH: In looking not only at a new language (Java), but a new paradigm for
computing, we felt that a place was needed that people could use to share
code, share ideas, share information; basically a place people could come to
help each other advance this new paradigm.
JDJ: Why is EarthWeb building the site and not Sun?
JH: EarthWeb has a very strong experience base in developing on-line
services. What we have done is apply that experience to this particular
application. When we approached Sun about this idea, they were very excited
about it; t... (more)
